- why you have the power to take control
From nature, habits are designed to guide us. They are little dependencies making life easier for us. The conscious and the subconscious mind are working hand in hand all the time. Habits are extremely important for us! They are the foundation for all complex learning – things would be extremely difficult if we could not rely on them. Consider if everything you did was a new experience every time! Wow, that would be exhausting!
Think about any random morning during the week. You get up at a specific time, you have your morning routine, eat your normal breakfast, brushes your teeth, leave home at a specific time, drive the same route to work. You would probably be able to do this in your sleep – because you rely on your brain to do half the job for you!
But have you ever considered if your habits are good or bad for you? And have you asked yourself if you ought to change some of the habits? Or why your habits have turned into habits in the first place? To change bad habits and dependencies, it’s important that we try and understand the habits.
Habits are created in the brain. The brain is built of neurons – nerve cells – that are transmitting electrochemical signals. There are around 100 billion neurons in the human brain. Each one of the neurons branches out and create a network with connections created based on your thoughts and memories.
We know that the nerve connections that are active stay connected. If you think or do something every day, the nerve connections stay tight. We also know that if the nerve connections are not active they disconnect. Every time we interrupt a line of thought, the nerves start losing their regular connections. And if we replace the line of thought with a different action, new nerve connections start to form.
So the less you use the old connection, the weaker the nerve connection will become! You are at this moment in control of the formation of your habits. And stopping a habit is difficult whereas introducing a new habit is much easier because of the neurological connection. This is the reason you have to change your habits instead of only trying to get rid of it.
Remember that all habits and behavior you have learned has helped you at some point and has deserved a purpose. But times are changing, and now your old habits do not deserve this purpose any longer. It’s time to kiss them goodbye and make room for new healthy habits, improving your health and your joy.
