Organic.nut - can she inspire you?

Organic.nut making the transformation to 100% organic in Dubai

Did you join the organic food movement already? Or are you thinking about going organic, but not sure how to do and where to get inspiration?

One place you can find inspiration is on Instagram. At My Healthy DXB, we love using Instagram for inspiration and information. We found the account of the remarkable woman Allia (aka @Organic.nut) who is letting you and the rest of Instagram’s 300 million users in on her transformation to go organic in UAE. She has taken matters of her family’s health into her own hands by going 100% organic and is sharing the journey with us. At My Healthy DXB, we were interested in knowing more so we met Allia to hear the story of her organic journey.

As a teenager, Allia became a vegetarian. Not the ‘normal’ kind who eats lots of fruits and vegetables, but the kind of vegetarian who lives off white bread, peanut butter, and Pepsi Max. About a decade later, things changed, primarily because she became pregnant. Her body and mind started yearning for a change. It wanted real food like fruits and vegetables.

‘When I finally listened to what my body wanted and needed, I started eating conventional fruits and vegetables, but I found they tasted bland and uninteresting. I didn’t like them at all. My body was so used to the taste of sugar and artificial sweeteners; I was hooked on chemical food, high without knowing it! But when I tried organic products I was sold. They tasted great. I started reading more about the production methods and nutritional content, which convinced me that this was right compared to eating conventional food. So I started my journey to become 100% organic!

Eating organic food is very expensive. Or is it?

In the beginning, my husband thought it was very expensive to eat organic food. But we started getting a weekly box delivered with mixed fruits and vegetables from Greenheart Organic Farms and creating our meals from local and seasonal organic food. Starting out this way made me experiment with more and different fresh foods and allowed me to be creative in what I was cooking to ensure no organic food was going to waste! Eating more sensible alongside shopping around, looking for special deals and focusing on being mindful when shopping, has allowed my family to eat organic food on a budget. That makes me feel great, and I want everyone to know that it’s possible!

Allia continues: “Now I customize my boxes and look what’s on specials to cook healthy and cheap. Going 100% organic has made me try new foods, which I love. New types of food keep meals interesting. Besides, it feels good to eat something I know is completely fresh and healthy’.

Do you want an advise in terms of going organic in Dubai?

One piece of advice from Allie in terms of going organic in Dubai: ‘Take baby steps and change gradually, but start now! Go and buy just one banana, avocado, carrot or (my favorite) sweet potato. It doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Just try it to taste and feel the difference.’

‘I’m optimistic about changing the future of organic food in Dubai! People can help change the future of this country and ensure that Dubai is on the forefront of health and wellbeing. This place has already come a long way in a short time. I’m convinced that organic food is essential in securing a healthy and long life’.
